As the new year is in full swing, it’s not hard to see what most people’s resolution is. It’s the one thing that tops many people’s list as the #1 resolution for 2018 – Lose Weight. Though it comes in many variations:
- “I want to lose weight”
- “I want to feel better”
- “I want to fit into my ‘skinny jeans'”
- “I want to lose the baby weight”…
And the list goes on. But the the true underlying theme of all these resolutions is – I want to look and feel good. At Diablo Family Physicians, we get that. It’s on many of our lists too. Before you do anything else, it’s important to make a true resolution and stick to it!
Set Positive Intentions
Instead of focusing on how daunting it might be to stay true to your resolution and lose the weight, focus on a future you. Ask yourself, “How will I feel after I lose the weight?” Some answers might be that you feel more energetic. You may notice that you are sharper during the day because you don’t feel sluggish, and sleep better at night because your days are more productive. Perhaps your emotional state is different. Once you’ve the lost the weight you have higher self-esteem and self-confidence, which makes you smile wherever you go. If you want to be this person, read on.
Evaluate Your Obstacles
Without a doubt there will be obstacles that seem inevitable and throw you off track. Simply taking a moment to evaluate and write down what those obstacles might be will help you map out a plan of attack so you don’t fall into a trap. Maybe you are a busy mom who finds herself eating all the leftover mac and cheese and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that the kids didn’t finish. It’s hard not to waste food but that doesn’t mean you can’t save it for them for later. It happens subconsciously but if you write it down it will bring a new awareness to your day.
Going out to eat with friends and family can be tough and can often result in falling off the wagon and derailing your lifestyle change. Of course they picked your most favorite cheeseburger joint in town! Try checking out the menu before you go and picking something that is more in line with your goals. Being prepared with something in mind will help you steer clear of your usual picks.
